Transition

In May my church made the switch from being in a temporary building to a more permanent building we have keys to. So, we were in full gear for about one full month - painting, cleaning, scrubbing, installing new technology, making the building our home. Throughout the summer I helped my church and missions team receive and serve alongside about 4 different short-term-missions teams. It was a whole lot - like a whole lot. I didn’t know that my Spanish was good enough to translate on the spot - I didn’t know that Mexicans had expectations of North Americans and that North Americans had... Read more
Mi Casa es Tu Casa

I have been told that Mexicans are more welcoming more “warm climate” natured than those in the states. I shrugged my shoulders and said “okay” This past week I have been living in that observation. It’s intensified when these Mexicans I’ve been loved by are also Christians. A series of very sad events took place this week - but Christ was glorified in all. My sweet sweet host sister passed away in a car accident. It hurt so much and I felt like a blubbering mess for 3 days. My cheeks hurt from all the crying and all the wind that made them rosier than usual. But the body of Christ... Read more
Making Mexico Home

So, I’ve been here in Mexico for about 5 months, which is a little crazy to think about. I understand SO MUCH Spanish, which is crazy, considering I didn’t speak any before I came here to Mexico. I gave my friend a tour around Mexico and even translated things for my friend. WHAT. I feel comfortable in many different neighborhoods here. I have found friends, like real humans who tell me not to apologize for who I am, who push me to do things I might find embarrassing and are in my corner as my hypeman shouting in Spanish and English. W O W I am learning Spanish also through singing. I am... Read more
Memorizing Metro Stops

I keep telling people, I don't really miss my home, and that I feel comfortable here. I think some people in Mexico and in the states don't believe me. But, two and a half months in and it feels like home, like I don’t feel out of place. Probably thanks to my nomadic childhood, that continued into my nomadic adulthood. When I relocate to a new city, I like to walk everywhere, it’s the fastest way for me to get comfortable with a city and since I do not have a car (or license) public transportation is my good friend. I associate metro/subway stops with what’s there. While I lived in New York,... Read more
So, did you study to be a missionary?

Ha, yeah right - that’d make my life a little easier. I get asked a lot of questions, some are from people I’ve known since I’ve arrived, and some are from people I have only known for a minuet. No – I didn’t come to Mexico for an adventure. No – I didn’t come to Mexico because I didn’t have a job lined up. No – I didn’t come to Mexico because I felt pity toward the Mexican people. No – I didn’t come to Mexico because I love warm weather. No – I didn’t come because only I can go to Mexico and I’m special and all that nonsense. No. No. No. (refer to Michael Scott when Toby Flenderson... Read more
