Beauty in the Present

By on Track: Community Development Region: Africa - North

When I first arrived to East Africa 9 months ago, my desire was to use this time as a stepping stone. I had goals for my future in minstry and I wanted to know what was next. I wanted to reach my end goal, and time seemed to be dragging. Here's the thing, we often overlook the beauty in the present if we only look to what's next. I don't mean to sound like your mom, but maybe you need to hear this too. God has used the last three months to turn my life upside down. He desires me, whole hearted and abandoned before the throne.  So what does this look like for me? Well, it looks… Read more >>

Worship Overflow

By on Track: Community Development Region: Africa - North

Every summer, NGO explats in our country leave because of the climbing temperatures. I had mixed feelings, but stepping away has given me a new perspective. I've had time to be still (which I hate, but I'm learning to enjoy) and I've had time to listen. Here's some truth I needed to be reminded of (and maybe you do too): We do not make a difference. Whoah, Grace, that's harsh.  Let me back up a bit. *We* do not make a dent. As in, we're small and could not possbly posess enough power or skill to transform things the way we want to. And that's okay. We are not the ones who bring the… Read more >>

The Dragon

For those of you unfamiliar with the Chronicles of Narnia, there are spoilers ahead.  At the beginning of the month, I took a solo retreat. I wanted to take time to pray, reflect, etc.. I got out of the city and stayed in a town that offers a more simple way of living. On my last night in this town, I was sitting on my bed and I talked to the Lord. During this time, He reminded me of Eustace Scrubb. Eustace is a bratty kid and I had no sympathy for him in the beginning of The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. Why should I? His attude was wrong and he was underserving… Read more >>

Give Me the Ocean

My country is by the sea, which means that I get to enjoy the beach quite often. I have discovered how much I love the ocean. It's a great place to talk to the Lord. Feeling the waves pushing against me makes me feel alive in ways I cannot truly express in words, but I try anyway. February was a tough month and I needed to express myself. I was snorkeling and I was watching all of the beautiful creatures around me. I held my hands out in front of me and it was surreal. There I was, in waters full of life. I wrote the following poem as a result. It's a piece of my heart and what the Lord… Read more >>

A few of my favorite things

By on Track: Community Development Region: Africa - North

I turn 25 in February. In honor of turning a quarter of a century, I give you 25 things that bring me joy in East Africa.  Wearing the same outfits each week because nobody cares. Going to the market. (It’s always an adventure) Being recognized by the women who set up shop on my street. Slowly becoming friends with the people who work at the coffee shop. (I may or may not go there once a week) Setting up my classroom every Tuesday and Saturday Watching my students connect the dots with English.  The feeling of walking on clouds after teaching. Learning a new language (… Read more >>
