A few of my favorite things

Posted on Wednesday, January 30, 2019

I turn 25 in February. In honor of turning a quarter of a century, I give you 25 things that bring me joy in East Africa.

  1. Wearing the same outfits each week because nobody cares.
  2. Going to the market. (It’s always an adventure)
  3. Being recognized by the women who set up shop on my street.
  4. Slowly becoming friends with the people who work at the coffee shop. (I may or may not go there once a week)
  5. Setting up my classroom every Tuesday and Saturday
  6. Watching my students connect the dots with English.
  7. The feeling of walking on clouds after teaching.
  8. Learning a new language (sometimes it makes me want to scream, but it still counts)
  9. The ongoing list of ethnicities/nationalities people guess when they meet me.
  10. Drinking tea with some local friends
  11. Spending time with my roomie
  12. Going on walks in the city by myself. It makes me feel like I belong.
  13. Goats. Goats everywhere.
  14. Playing“was that a goat or screaming child”. (see above)
  15. Movie nights with my teammates
  16. Praying for our students by name every Tuesday
  17. Making friends with local people
  18. Dancing alone in my room to all sorts of music
  19. Re-reading the letters from friends that I put on my wall
  20. Hearing the bread man honk his horn as he passes by
  21. Ice cream truck garbage man. No further explanation will be given.
  22. Saying hello to the uncle who sells me phone credit
  23. Smiling children
  24. Sambusas. Enough said.
  25. Watching the rainbow unfold as I walk the streets. Color everywhere. I love it!
