The building is large. Perfectly rectangular, it appears daunting over the stone sprinkled grass field below. Each of the hand crafted stones aligned to create images of indigenous people, images from a time long since passed. The sun, the moon, fields of corn, spears, bows, temples, all images associated with a cultural identity. The sun is high but the daunting gaze of the library provides shade for the students studying under it's reach. Walking up the stone steps I am anxiously waiting to find the group of about 8 or so people I am expecting. Is there a demonstration going on? What's with... Read more

Quesadillas don’t come with queso inside. I know, what? It’s in the name… I have spent a few days trying to think of a way to compare my first full week in Mexico. Then finally while sitting down for lunch with a few friends the comic relief my confusion provided made me realize I had found the perfect comparison. Merry Christmas! I hope this celebration of Jesus’ birth has been filled with lots of memories and time spent with loved ones. With January 9th quickly approaching there is a great feeling of anticipation lingering. Several of my friends from my “Go Corps” class have already arrived at their locations and are getting settled into their new homes and meeting their new teams. I will be joining them in just a few days. December has been a wonderful month full of God’s provision. One example has been my exit from the Fire Department. I spent a lot of time praying about my resignation. I prayed... Read more

Moms – I can always count on mine for an inspirational email every few days. Usually in the form of one of the many blogs she follows. Today she shared one that was different than most, one that really touched on some of the topics I have been feeling. I am currently 49 days away from launching into a new journey to Mexico City for the next two years. While this is incredibly exciting news, it has not come easy and without hesitation at times. The story my mom shared with me today was one of self-consciousness, doubt and remorse. The blogger was discussing how she let a friend down years ago... Read more

It’s fall yall. Or at least according to the calendar it is. Here in Texas we had about a week of a “cold front” come through and it was a little chilly walking outside for a few mornings. If you are from the North you are probably laughing, but this is a real deal. We don’t get a winter down here. Sometimes a two week cold front, if we are lucky. So how would you spend your last couple of weeks home before you leave for two years? Doing what you love of course! I love Texas, I love Football – And I most definitely love Texas Football! Let me tell you though, it can be heartbreaking to be a... Read more
