A Joyous Prayer Answered
Posted on November 5, 2018
I often find myself perplexed to reflect on my time thus far in Mexico. Coming up on one year. I still remember my first night with my first family, in my first host home. I was utterly intimidated. Two years here with people I do not know, with whom I cannot communicate - Had I lost my mind? Stanley Hudson then came to mind with his famous quote from, The Office, “Boy have you lost your mind? Because I’ll help you find it.” I laughed and brought myself out of my wallowing in self pity and ceased my descent down the rabbit hole of my thoughts. I had been praying one common prayer for months,... Read more
So Now What?

Every summer the Avance team has a theme. Something for us to focus on and be reminded of throughout the summer. For this group, we chose the Jars of Clay passage from 2 Corinthians 4. “But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us”. This has led to a lot of thought over missional living. Often times, when we think of missions, we think of going to another country, providing some type of work that satisfies a need of a community, worshipping together and sharing what God has done in our lives with the people we are working with... I think I could count the number of times I have directly shared the gospel prior to coming to Mexico. Not necessarily a resume builder when you think of a missionary. I have spent some time thinking over what the reason for that may have been. Maybe a lack of confidence, a fear of rejection or judgement, but I think the simplest reason was a lack of understanding. Those of us that have grown up in church or been surrounded by Christian family members have no doubt heard the Gospel many times over. But I would guess in a specific context. As a message of good news for the unbelievers, for the... Read more
Sewing Seeds

There isn’t one grand story I am going to tell you in this post. I have spent some time reflecting on the past few weeks and after thinking about a recent talk we had with Avance, I was reminded that evangelism and discipleship are both a process. Throughout the bible this process is often portrayed as a farmer working in his field. In Matthew 13 Jesus is tells us about the Parable of the Sower. We read about the importance of planting seeds in “good soil”, so that they are not burned by the sun, strangled by the weeds or eaten by the birds. Elsewhere we can read about planting seeds to be... Read more
Modern Day Miracles

The bible is “llendo” with extraordinary examples of God’s power. We collectively call these demonstrations, “milagros”, and all have a special purpose; to spread the Glory of God. An ordinary stick used as a tool to deliver His people from centuries of slavery, A young boy defeating a mighty giant, three loyal servants remaining unharmed in a scalding furnace, the lame walking, the blind seeing, and a man dead three days waking from his sleep. These are a just a few of the many examples of miracles we see in the bible. Sadly, I think many of us associate this word with history; as something... Read more
