Today was Rich

By on Track: Compassion - Justice Region: Middle East

Today was rich in so many senses of the word. It was rich in provision, Laughter, Frustration, Prayer, Hope, Searching for the best in people, Stress, Gifts, Babies, Friendship, Work, Support, Over the top cheesecake and coffee, Conversation, Fog, Wonderful stories of looking back, and Looking forward. It was rich in unique Hope, excitement, and bitter-sweetness. And I am trying to savor and remember each one. It’s as if the fact that there is an official end in sight (I am officially moving back to the US in June), that I long and savor and appreciate each beauty. But you can’t do that… Read more >>

The Hidden Life of Home Visits

By on Track: Compassion - Justice Region: Middle East

My dear teammate Cate*: Esther*, could you call Sumaya* and see if she’d like us to visit on Wednesday? .... They want us? Great. Can you ask for their address? E: They said that you’d remember where the house is. C: Oh... really? (They obviously have no idea how directionally challenged I am). Right now I can’t even think of which neighborhood they’re in.... E: They said it’s near the tree. C: Oh! Ok, I know what neighborhood “the tree” is. But where exactly is their house...... Oh, yeah, last time we saw Sumaya, it was actually when we were trying to visit Fatima. But Fatima wasn’t home,… Read more >>

Meditation on Psalm 27

By on Track: Compassion - Justice Region: Middle East

Psalm 27 is one of my very favorite Psalms. Really I have a lot of favorites. Ok really I love the Psalms in general. I love their poetry and fire, the deep laments and the joyous shouts of praise. And so I have been reading through them again in this season, and I hit upon this favorite. Psalm 27 has been meaningful to me in many ways and different times. It challenges me to check my deep desire and course-corrects me when I get distracted in my intentions. I want my only desire to be to “dwell in the house of the Lord forever,” soaking in his majesty, beauty and goodness. I want to sit in… Read more >>

Trash bags full of gifts

By on Track: Compassion - Justice Region: Middle East

Recently at Kids Korner, our clothing closet for refugee children, we received a big and beautiful donation. It was fully of nearly new toddler clothes from a local expat preschool community. As a thank you we wanted to take some photos of the donations, however, often times donations look like this: Like a big ole pile of trash. We did get some nice photos of what they gave and are so grateful for their partnership, but the trash bags got me thinking. Not all nice, godly, sacrificial gifts or actions look good, lovely and pure. Sometimes or even often times they look more like trash… Read more >>

May the Word Truly Be Alive for Her

By on Track: Compassion - Justice Region: Middle East

Earlier this year a young mother who was new to our moms program came into the clothing closet, I recognized her, but we hadn’t really met before. As with every new client who comes, we offered a book of stories of Jesus to read with her kiddo. She jumped at the chance! The next time she came in, just last month, she eagerly asked if we had any other books of Jesus she could read. We have been running really low on Arabic literature recently, but we offered her what we had, a New Testament. She again jumped to take it, eager to read more of the stories she has been hearing at program. In… Read more >>
