Trash bags full of gifts

Posted on Wednesday, May 29, 2019

Recently at Kids Korner, our clothing closet for refugee children, we received a big and beautiful donation. It was fully of nearly new toddler clothes from a local expat preschool community. As a thank you we wanted to take some photos of the donations, however, often times donations look like this:

Like a big ole pile of trash.

We did get some nice photos of what they gave and are so grateful for their partnership, but the trash bags got me thinking. Not all nice, godly, sacrificial gifts or actions look good, lovely and pure. Sometimes or even often times they look more like trash bags – unlikely containers for blessings. Likewise, feeding the hungry, clothing the naked and caring for the poor, the orphan and the widow do not look or feel like sunshine and roses; it looks like sorting through trash bags of donated clothing, building shelves, or buying 30 packs of feminine pads every week. But God did not call us, as his followers, to a glamorous life, he asked us for obedience whatever that may look like for each one of us.

All of us are called to faithfully act in obedience, however that looks in your life, I want to encourage you to pause and take a closer look to find blessing and mercy in what may, at first, look like a bag of trash. And I want to thank you for all of your faithful support of me and my work here, as you truly do encourage me in my own, walk to trust and obey.

Blessing and peace to you all.
