Hope - Middle East Updates

Class of 2015
Discipleship and Community Organizing Apprentice in Middle East
Track: Compassion - Justice track
Region: Middle East
Hi everyone! My name is Hope! I am a writer with a passion for empowering and activating people in order to spark change in communities! Of course, this is best done with God as the foundation and center of our lives. I am excited to live amongst the marginalized and create friendships with fantastic people so that I can show them the love, grace and mercy our God has for them.

Living in a barnyard

By on Track: Compassion - Justice Region: Middle East

I don’t live in the cleanest place in the world. The streets are usually coated in a fresh layer of dust and trash. Despite the sweeping I see people doing, the streets never do get 100% picked up. If i’m lucky I can go two weeks without having to walk through water from a broken sewage line and sometimes when I walk through the streets liquid falls on me from apartments above (I have resolved to believe this is from air conditioners). This last year I have become accustomed to things being a little dirty and I'm now used to smelling weird things, but as of a couple weeks ago, the streets… Read more >>

How to lap swim: N.Africa edition

By on Track: Compassion - Justice Region: Middle East

First of all, this is not where I live (sadly). This is a picture from vacation but one of my only ones with water in it! 1. Find a place to swim.  Sounds easy enough! So, I began asking tons of people. All my options were an hour and a half away and only open in the middle of the day or thousands of dollars a year. But after 10 months, I finally asked the right person. A girls college is open in the mornings (American mornings, yay 6am) and only 30 min from my place (depending on traffic). 2. Call said location. After having someone who speaks the national dialect call (with no answer… Read more >>

Life lessons

By on Track: Compassion - Justice Region: Middle East

This month I am relearning some of my biggest and simplest life lessons.  I have a tendency to fill my schedule to the brim. I love moving and getting things done. I love meeting with as many people as I can. I love seeing new things and doing new things. But I have been back here less than a month and many of my responsibilities have slipped as I am distracted by new things. I haven't had a good sabbath rest this month because I fill them up with friends or things to finish up. I haven't journaled or processed a lot of big life things, because I am too tired to even think about pouring… Read more >>

I am His

By on Track: Compassion - Justice Region: Middle East

I am a child of God: the Most High, the King of kings, my Savior, my Rock. He loves me with a passionate and jealous love and He has created me for my exact purpose. He has sculpted me to do His will. He seeks me and refines me. Yes, the Great Almighty God is my Father and he values me. He looks at me and what is sees is good and important and beautiful.     I know these truths. I hold these truths. But sometimes when I think of my value, I let these truths take a backseat to what I feel like other’s are saying or thinking. Why is this approval from others so… Read more >>

Slow, sweet progress

By on Track: Compassion - Justice Region: Middle East

Two weeks ago when we entered into a new language phase, it said that we are going to begin to have more intentional conversations. I laughed at that, but then saw it happen.  This month, I rented a new house with the help of my leader, but for the most part, I understood it all and spoke for myself! Two of the influential-connector-men told me after a long conversation filled with laughter that I had a dangerous mind, one of my favorite compliments so far. I also get mistaken for someone from this region more and more. Overall, it’s just easier. I don’t get exhausted when I’m sitting… Read more >>
