Hello...Meet Taylor

Taylor graduated with a degree in Social Work with a minor in Spanish. Throughout a lot of her time at school, she was interested in the work that Anti-trafficking ministries did, and she knew there was a great need for more workers. So when Taylor saw a placement that involved that type of ministry as well as allowed her to use my Spanish minor, she knew that this was what God had been preparing her for.

>>Tell us about where you served and a general overview of your two-year placement.

Taylor: I served with an anti-trafficking ministry in Mexico City (one of the biggest and most populous cities in the world!). I assisted in a transition home for young women who had escaped or been taken out of trafficking/high-risk situations. I led bible studies, art therapy classes, and helped with the home's mission to prepare the women to live productive and normal lives in the city one day.

>>Why are you glad that you tithed 2 years in your 20's?

Taylor: It was such a formative time for my faith. I grew in so many ways, learned more about who God made me to be, and how to rely on him in both good and hard times.

>>What was your biggest barrier to getting overseas?

Taylor: Probably my relationships- I spent a lot of time struggling with my decision to go because I was in a committed relationship (and soon to be engaged) with my now husband. I ultimately decided, with much encouragement from a mentor, that distance from each other in the short term to serve and obey the Lord would be worth the heartache and bless any future we had together.

>>When you think about your experience in your placement, what are you most proud of?

Taylor: I'm most proud of the relationships I made, which were super hard for me to do in a second language that I was still very new at! And also the fact that I learned to navigate the megacity that is Mexico City

>>How did your experience living overseas positively impact your faith?

Taylor: I learned how to deeply rely on the Lord for peace and comfort. The Lord also taught me so much about healthy rhythms and how to find rest and slow in a fast paced life.

>>What is one thing about the culture or work in your host country that you really enjoyed or appreciated?

Taylor: I really appreciated the culture around the dinner table in Mexico. Every evening we would have a small dinner of sweet bread and coffee and talk about any number of things. Sometimes I had questions about language or the city, or myths, or even popular TV shows that they loved! I didn't grow up eating together with my family around the table, so having that time with my host family to talk and learn more about their culture and family was awesome!

>>How did your experience tithing your career directly or indirectly impact your career or job opportunities after you returned?

Taylor: While I loved being able to help the vulnerable in the transition house, I actually learned that my passions and skill sets were better used elsewhere! I loved being able to use my story and experience in Mexico City to mobilize others to go and do! So I joined staff with GoCorps after returning home.

>>Share one or two great things that have happened as a direct result of your Tithing Your Career overseas after college.

Taylor: I found an amazing job with GoCorps!

>>What would you say to someone who was considering tithing their career as their next step?

Taylor: There are times it will be hard and times that will fill you with such joy! The Lord will be near you always, giving you the support you need, so there's no need to be afraid! Take that next step.

>>How many years has it been since you completed your two years with GoCorps and what are you doing now?  (both career-wise and living missionally)

Taylor: I moved back to the States almost two and a half years ago now (Dec. 2022) and I am now working to mobilize and coach college students and young adults through GoCorps!
