Envision Your Place: India

Envision Your Place: India

Thinking about living overseas can be exciting, but it might also be a little nerve-wracking. What if you’ve never been to the country you’re thinking about going to? It can be really hard to imagine what it would even be like! In this series, we’re going to share creatively written journeys through different cities where we have GoCorps placements to help you imagine what it might be like to live in these places. As you read them, use your imagination to really picture yourself there. Pay attention to what you feel, what you notice, and what stands out to you; God might just be trying to get your attention!

As you begin to read, I invite you to pause for a moment to be still. Close your eyes and take a deep inhale and a full exhale. Clear your mind and invite the Lord into your imagination. Now, open your eyes…

Imagine India.

You wake up to the sound of the local mosque blasting the call of prayer. You cut up some mango for breakfast and sit down in your apartment living room to look over your plans for the day. You also take some time to pray over the conversations and interactions you will have today. As you wrap up your morning you throw on your best tennis shoes, knowing that today you will be on your feet a lot.

Fruit sellers walk down the residential streets ringing their bells and pushing carts full of fresh bananas, coconuts, and mangoes.

After the many flights of stairs, you are met with the hustle and bustle of the streets. There are crowds of people everywhere talking and laughing. There are cars, motorcycles, and rickshaws racing past you in every direction. Fruit sellers walk down the residential streets ringing their bells and pushing carts full of fresh bananas, coconuts, and mangoes. It is immediately clear that today is going to be another hot, humid, and sticky day, so you stop one of the fruit sellers and buy a coconut. The guy cuts a hole in your coconut with his machete and sticks a straw in it for you to drink. Nothing beats the taste of fresh coconut water!

In this place, you have learned that roads aren’t just meant for cars because everyone uses them, whether they are on wheels or on foot.

Coconut in hand you walk down the road. In this place, you have learned that roads aren’t just meant for cars because everyone uses them, whether they are on wheels or on foot. Today you are going to work on some artisan projects with the women in your team’s program. You stop a brightly colored rickshaw and jump in hoping it will get you there faster, but also just because it’s an exciting way to travel! As you jump in and tell your driver where you need to go, he pushes the gas and you both go flying down the bumpy and overcrowded streets, dodging other cars and lots of people. As you ease into conversation with your driver, you notice some figures on his dashboard. You ask him about them and he tells you that these are his gods. He then asks what gods you believe in and you are able to share more about the one and only true God that you believe in. He listens and nods thoughtfully.

He then asks what gods you believe in and you are able to share more about the one and only true God that you believe in.

As you arrive at your destination, you see the rest of your team waving at you. After paying your driver and waving goodbye, you are instantly embraced with hugs from the locals. Kids are running to you and their smiles just seem so contagious. As soon as you can make your way through the people that have come to welcome you, you walk over to where the women have started working. Today they are making headbands from sari material. This is one of your favorite things these women make. They are beautiful, brightly colored, and remind you so much of the women that sew them. The women you work with are so hardworking and very talented. You stay for hours working on headbands, talking with the women, and sharing a delicious lunch of rice and chicken curry.

At the end of the day, you and your teammates gather the women and do a Bible study together. Right now, you are reading through Matthew. You soak in the conversations, questions, and prayer requests before everyone packs up and walks or hails rickshaws to go home.

You are tired, hungry, and sweaty, but on the way home you still have to laugh at the number of cows that roam free eating the street garbage. You also laugh at the monkeys on the roof bothering some of the locals. The sun is beginning to set as your apartment comes into sight and you rejoice in another day here. You love this place and are excited to continue watching the Lord move!
