Letter to Future Goers

By on Track: Compassion - Justice Region: Middle East

I transitioned home this month. Leaving my home in the Middle East was sad, but I know the timing was right.  So, my future Goers, I have some words of wisdom for you as you consider whether to go or not, and make sure you go with the right group and people. So sit back, relax, and let your Grandma Hadley tell you the top secrets every Goer should know.  Make sure you have an idea of what type of work you would like to do before you go. What did you major in? Do you want to do something relating to that? Do you want to try something different for a while? Consider what you want… Read more >>

PoP!

This month was a sad month. But before I’m ready to post about it, I would first like to share a really exciting story that happened last week at the community center. A friend of our team became a believer a few weeks ago, and since then we’ve been looking and praying for a community of local believers for him to be a part of.  A new person came to the center last week. He sat on the couch across from me and started speaking in English to someone else in the room. Taken aback by how fluent his English was, I started engaging him in conversation.  “Where did you learn English?” I… Read more >>

Me and Children

This month I had a lot of encounters with local children. Here are some interesting things that happened while being around kids this month: I met an eleven year old girl at the community center who spoke perfect English because she went to an English immersion school. We talked about what we hope will happen in our futures, and started talking about the families we want someday. She told me she wants to adopt children someday. I said that was a good idea, and maybe I would do that too. She then responded, “Oh, you’ll definitely go to heaven then. If anyone gives a home to a homeless child,… Read more >>

The Great Black Beast

We’re gonna do a fun story today.  About a month ago I went to a retreat center in the country with some American friends. It’s nice to be able to leave the city every once in a while - it’s quieter out there, and the center has absolutely magnificent food.  When I was considering whether or not to come to the Middle East, one of the questions I asked was: what kinds of critters live there? “None,” my leader said over our Skype call. “There’re none. Sometimes cockroaches. But that’s it.” Now, since being here I’ve learned that there are more critters here than that: they’re just… Read more >>

Great Is Thy Faithfulness

By on Track: Compassion - Justice Region: Middle East

One of the greatest gifts to me this month was a piano. I’ve been dying to play piano for nine months now. I’m not very good, but I absolutely love playing. Time just flies by when I’m playing piano, and afterwards I feel so much better. Since money doesn’t grow on trees, I’ve spent much of my time this week searching for free piano music on the internet. One of the songs I realized would be free was Great Is Thy Faithfulness. That song is really really hard. But it’s been very fun to practice. I’ll get it eventually. Great Is Thy Faithfulness has been a favorite of mine ever since coming… Read more >>
