GoCorps and Intervarsity

1

How It Started

Our focus of using your degree and serving incarnationally has been a great fit for IV students!  Since 2012, we've been a part of every Urbana and have connected with a bunch of CSMs.  We've had hundreds of coaching conversations with InterVarsity students and have placed dozens of these students in our two-year placements.

2

How It's Going

Urbana and GoCorps formed a strategic partnership to invite all students at the Urbana22 conference to consider a mid-term mission commitment upon graduation.  This partnership has resulted in hundreds of students and dozens of CSMs connecting with GoCorps pursuing next step and mobilization resources.

Relevant and achievable global options for all of your students!

GoCorps is prioritizing the development of a culturally agile staff team that is trained to coach students of all ethnicities.  We prioritize an organizational culture where minority voices and perspectives are centered and where the priorities and barriers of the underrepresented are a priority and focus for our ministry and mobilization model.  We are creating resources, facilitating events and providing global placements that are relevant, achievable and attractive for students and young adults of all majors and backgrounds.

One way we're creatively helping students is through our Final Mile Fund scholarships.  Deputized fundraising is often a significant barrier for many students due to limited social networks connected to their cultural or church background.  Toward that end, the Final Mile Fund was created to bridge the gap exists for the 20% of our Goers each year that are in need of this scholarship.

How Intervarsity Has Helped Prepare Goers

Lynn

During my time in Intervarsity, it didn’t matter on our major or our background, we gathered together because we just wanted to see God’s Kingdom come on campus. There were engineering majors, business majors, agriculture majors, you name it! Yet we all came together each week to grow, learn, and be sent out to be lights in our own little parts of campus.

GoCorps was a natural extension of that. Just like at IV, all degrees could be used to see God’s Kingdom come in this world. I didn’t have to be a special major to go overseas, just like I didn’t have to be a special major to be in IV and make an impact on my campus.

IV taught me how to be a light and grow in my faith while I was studying engineering. GC gave me a chance to be a light and grow in my faith as I actually did engineering!

-Lynn, California Polytechnic State University, Engineering Track

Nathan

"My time with Intervarsity at UT Austin allowed me to get a glimpse of God's multicultural family. I was a part of Asian American Campus Ministry (AACM) chapter of IV, but one of my favorite events was when we gathered all the different ethnic chapters together for joint fellowship. For anyone that's experienced the diversity and community of IV, or participated in their STiM missions program, GoCorps is a great way to extend and explore that deeper calling for missions."

-Nathan, University of Texas, Business Track

Christine

"My involvement with the InterVarsity chapter at California State University, Northridge led me to being connected with GoCorps! It was through IV that the Lord continued to grow my heart to serve Him, and have a Kingdom mindset in the work that I do, so coming out of college it felt like a very smooth transition from graduating to learning more about what GoCorps is all about and getting involved. Because IV is all about serving and coming alongside students, and GC focuses on young adults and recent grads, the decision to become a Goer felt very natural and I felt seen in the stage of life I was at."

-Christine, California State University, Arts Track

Sarah

"I was an IV student from 2016 to 2019 and during that time had the opportunity to go to Urbana 2018, where I first was exposed to GoCorps. My time as an Intervarsity student really helped to set the foundation for what the Lord would end up doing through Urbana and the months that followed as I wrestled with and considered what the Lord was asking me to do after graduation. The community around me, the love of scripture that was fostered, and the discipleship within IV was all integral to anchoring me as I stepped into the exciting call that was going overseas for 2 years. I'm so thankful for how God used my time in Intervarsity to prepare me for (unbeknownst to me) and expose me to an incredible time to serve overseas with GoCorps."

-Sarah, The College of St. Scholastica, Compassion - Justice Track

OUR DISTINCTIVES: TWO-YEAR AND SKILL-SET ORIENTED PLACEMENTS

>> Two-year placements are the sweet spot:  long enough to learn a new language and make an impact in a global project.  Long enough to get meaningful job experience and to make deep relationships.  But short enough that it makes good sense professionally and personally no matter what a student’s long-term career aspirations are.

>> Skill-set-oriented placements provide a natural and felt-need way for Goers to create relationships and engage authentically and in a growing way with the culture and place that they are serving.  Enabling students to bring their career and their passions with them means serving globally is relevant to all of the students on your campus.

Our Partnership with Urbana

For decades, the Urbana Mission Conference has been the gold standard in helping students discern their place in God’s global mission.  GoCorps and Urbana22 partnered closely to introduce Urbana students to specific ways of connecting their major to God’s mission.  Together with GoCorps, Urbana22 helped students of all majors and backgrounds consider how their passions could be pathways for the gospel by investing the first two years of their career overseas.

“I love how GoCorps is re-defining God’s mission as the renewal of all things through all vocations. They’re helping to stir up college graduates and launch them into the world with a solid theology of what it means to serve God overseas through your job.”

Scott Bessenecker

National Director, Global Engagement & Justice InterVarsity Christian Fellowship

How GoCorps works - GoCorps placements are entry-level positions for recent grads.

Year 1  is focused on culture and language learning, and developing cross-cultural competency and communication skills.

Year 2 allows students to take on leadership responsibilities and build on the language and relationships that were developed in their first year.

After their 2 years, our Goers have all the options on the table... marketplace, global, grad school or ministry!  They have two years of cross-cultural living experience, practical real world job experience in their major, many 'out of their comfort zone' experiences and stories, and life-long friendships.

GoCorps placements are designed for globally-minded Christians who want to make a difference, grow in their faith and use their unique background and skill-set.
