This month I don't want to write a profound update with an important lesson I’m learning, but rather, I want to treat this blog as something of a journal entry. This fall has been a series of unexpected events. As overseas kingdom workers we should expect to have visa issues at some point, but recurring visa issues as well as being forced to go home for an indefinite period of time is most definitely not expected or desired. This is the situation I find myself in. I continually try to find ways to where I'm at while I wait for an opportunity to return. As I move into month six here in SE Asia, I am realy beginning to feel the stress of culture shock, language and culture barriers, the inability to make close friends, and a forboding sense of spiritual failure. You see, my expectation of what success looks like has been changing. Is success having a certain number of ‘spiritual’ conversations with friends? A close friend of mine once told me, “we are living for eternity and all we have is right now.” Wow, let that sink in for a moment. Eternity seems like a long way off. For those of you not familiar with Muslim culture, every year for approximately one month, Muslim believers (cousins) practice Ramadan. Essentially, they wake up at 3am to eat breakfast to then fast all day and eat dinner after sundown. It is especially common to focus on rituals, prayers, and to absolve any unconfessed or unresolved sin. It is a time of spiritual sensitivity but also a time of celebration and lots of noise.
