A close friend of mine once told me, “we are living for eternity and all we have is right now.” Wow, let that sink in for a moment. Eternity seems like a long way off. Yet in the same sense, it is no farther than a school child expectantly waiting for the arrival of summer. As I think about this in the context of a new culture, I recognize my developing routine, and time seems to be slipping through my hands, though it’s not a lack of productivity which I fear. I most want to fear not spending time in fellowship with God. I want to manage and invest my time based on the quality of my fellowship with the Father.
Time management and balancing my priorities is an ongoing process. Occasionally, I find myself ensnared in the familiarity of my routine. I easily make excuses while dismissing wasted time and procrastinate on things that encourage me in my walk with God. Yet some days, I am encouraged by my successful discipline, time spent in God’s word, and frequent prayer. Balancing priorities is something everybody has to deal with, and I fear that I will continue to be balancing them for the rest of my life. However, God is continuing to work in me and in you, so continue to read His word and pray even though you might feel like giving up.
Ecc. 3:11 "He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, he has put eternity into man’s heart, yet so that he cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end."
