I gave it all up

By on Track: Community Development Region: Asia - Central

It’s funny that I can’t remember exactly what sparked my indignation and frustration. Especially because I absolutely adore my host family and my two young host sisters. But as it goes, and potentially more so living overseas, straws have been known to break the backs of camels.   It could have been that I made plans to take my host sisters somewhere and I’d cleared my schedule or that we were going to bake something together and I’d bought all the ingredients only to have them change their mind. It could have just been that I wanted them to come over to play and they didn’t want to… Read more >>

I wouldn't change a thing.

This summer I’ve spent a lot of time reading and learning more about community development. Planning for the future of our team and dreaming about what’s possible. It’s been so exciting to start digging into this work!    But it’s also been overwhelming. How do we get connected with a community to understand their values and work alongside them to accomplish their goals? How do we support community culture change that brings value to women and ends abuse? Can we even work with men and women in one room? My only educational experience with community development was a one semester… Read more >>

I must stay at your house today.

I must stay at your house today. The story of Zacchaeus always left me confused. Not the fact that Jesus would eat with a tax collector, or even the fact that Zacchaeus was in a tree. I was confused by Jesus. The fact that Jesus looks up at Zacchaeus (who was in a tree) and said “Zacchaeus come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.”   I mean how weird is that? And Zacchaeus welcomes him gladly! I would definitely not be welcoming someone as gladly as Zacchaeus if someone invited themselves to my house like that. Even if it was Jesus if I’m being honest.   Obviously… Read more >>

Loaves and Fishes

Loaves and Fishes.   John 6:9 "Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?"   It's obvious that Andrew was looking at what he had to offer (a little boy's measly lunch) and doubted that it would come close to achieving his goal of feeding 5,000 men plus all the additional women and children. I chuckle when I think that not only did this measly meal feed all of these people, with twelve full baskets left over, but Andrew's story has been told for centuries! When he questioned "How far will they go?" Andrew probably… Read more >>

Grass pudding and Jesus: a comparison you never thought you'd make

By on Track: Community Development Region: Asia - Central

Last week my language teacher described to me a traditional food that must be made by hand, can only be made in summer, takes several days, and is all in all, a very involved process. Now, this food, made from the starch extracted from roots of wild grasses, is ground by hand into a fine flour-like powder, and then cooked with milk or water until it is thicker than pudding. People go to all this work each year, making kilos of it in order to last the whole year. Why go to all the trouble for what is essentially grass pudding? I was quickly told that it's so valuable because it fills… Read more >>
