Melissa's Story

Featured story By on Track: Teaching Region: Latin America

Imagine that you’re a six-year-old child. You’ve just left behind all that you know -- your home, friends, and relatives -- to start a new life in another country. You don’t know the culture or the language, and at school, the words coming out of your teachers’ and classmates’ mouths sound like gibberish. That sounds rather challenging, doesn’t it? Well, that’s the story of one our students named *Melissa, who entered BridgeWay at the beginning of this school year, not knowing any Spanish or English. When we first met Melissa, my fellow teachers and I were at a loss as to how to communicate… Read more >>

Will you say yes?

“Would you like to sing ‘Joy to the World’ with me for the Christmas concert?” she asked.   “What? Uhh…sure!” I replied.   A month prior to this exchange, I had expressed to the worship leader of my church that I was interested in joining the worship team. Since then, we mutually decided that I would start practicing with the worship team on Sundays, and once I felt more comfortable, I could officially join the team. She also invited me to attend the worship team meeting, where we would discuss logistics and plan for the upcoming Christmas concert. I decided to attend the meeting… Read more >>

That you bear much fruit

In my last blog post, I shared my experience and sentiment about being a new missionary. Today, I want to talk about how I became interested in teaching and why I want to work at BridgeWay in particular. I have always enjoyed working with kids -- whether it’s being an assistant teacher in a school setting or serving in children’s ministries -- but I couldn’t imagine myself actually becoming a teacher. However, when I went on a week-long service trip to Mexico City with my church during the summer of 2017, I was reminded of how much I love teaching. I spent the week leading singing classes for… Read more >>

You're a Missionary! I'm a What?

I was recently in San Jose, California for a friend’s wedding. During my visit, I met with several other friends who live in the Bay area, and I followed them to their church on Sunday. There happened to be a guest speaker that day, who was preaching about faith and work. She started her sermon by asking the question “what is your current job?” and encouraged the congregation to share with each other about our jobs and our relationship to our work. Now, if you’re one of the people who have been involved in my life for the past few years, you know that my relationship to my work has been… “it’… Read more >>

A Long Time Coming!

By on Track: Teaching Region: Latin America

It has been a long journey to finally reach this point, but I am officially going to Mexico City this fall to serve as a missionary teacher for the next two years! I’m now back in Boston after my week-long training in Minneapolis, as I launch into full-time support raising over the summer. This past week has felt like a breath of fresh air as I’ve spent nearly every waking moment with nine other 20-somethings who are just as passionate as I am about participating in God’s global work. It has been amazing to hear everyone’s unique stories about where they are going, what they will be doing in… Read more >>
