A Letter to A Future Goer

By on Track: STEM Region: Africa - North

My time working overseas is over for now and while that's a sad realization, I'm definitely happy for all the things that I've learned.  If I had to boil what I've learned down into blog or a short statement, I'd say that I've learned to be adaptable no matter how inadequate I feel.  I went overseas thinking I was just going to be the IT guy that did tech work in the background and, to be honest, that was one of the main reasons I ended up deciding to go because I knew I would be comfortable doing that.  Fast-forward two years later and the list of things that I've had to do is… Read more >>

LIfe Update November

School Update The first exam for school will be coming up soon.  I recently gave out one of the progress tests that my teacher’s book provides to see how the students were doing.  And well, as I mentioned in the last update about how students here tend to learn differently, a lot of the types of questions from the progress test were just too difficult for the students to understand.  Thankfully, not all was lost, I was able to catch a few areas to help my students improve on.  I’m really thankful that, for the most part, my students are still coming to class because quite… Read more >>

Tropical Storms and Summer Plans

Tropical Storms and Summer Plans   The Storm Saturday night was the first time in a long time that I was able to see lightning.  It has been a pretty dry spring season this year without much rain; but, for the first time in three years, a tropical storm came through East Africa brining with it tons of rain and thunder. The pictures you see here are from the next morning.  Streets turned into canals and poorer houses were flooded with knee deep waters. We were able to watch all of this through the security of your brick house and car, but for most here, they spent the whole… Read more >>

Life Update               Right when my friend and I landed in Batam, Indonesia, we were greeted by our contact and hurried to a mall where the school our contact works at was putting on a graduation show for anyone who wanted to watch.  The families of the kids were seated in chairs and onlookers were standing along the outside.  We were directed to the very front of the seating area where only the principal and her family was sitting.  Suddenly all cameras were pointed to us instead of the concert and most eyes were… Read more >>

Final Week!

By on Track: STEM Region: Africa - North

Support Update  So, this is the final week!  It feels very surreal and is extremely crazy to think about.  Last week I had a lot of fun learning about languages and phonetics and have a quite a few pointers that I’m going to be able to use for French. When I get over to Africa, I’ll probably get into language learning within the first week.  I’ll be using a language helper which means I’ll have to plan the lessons myself which is what this program right now is training me for.  I’m definitely excited for what’s to come and can’t wait to update everyone next week when… Read more >>
