Heather - Middle East Updates

Class of 2015
Refugee Ministry and Care in Middle East
Track: Compassion - Justice track
Region: Middle East
Hello, welcome to the ponderings and scribbles of Heather! A few things about the scribbler -

I am a chronic bookworm, have a competitive streak that pops up randomly, am constantly humming some tune or another, and my heart's burdened for the oppressed. People are fascinating, cats are adorable, and ice cream is the best food ever. Mostly, as imperfect as I am, I love Jesus and want Him to use my life as He ushers physical and spiritual transformation into individual lives and the world. These are my musings and discoveries as I spend the next two years overseas with that goal in mind. Enjoy!

Deeper Waters

By on Track: Compassion - Justice Region: Middle East

During my junior year of college, I studied abroad and landed in South Africa, where I had the amazing opportunity to go shark cage diving. The morning of, a group of us took a boat onto the Atlantic waters, donned our wetsuits (which were a pain to put on), and climbed into a cage strapped to the side of a rocking ship. Our instructor gave us very clear directions and told us he would use the high ground to point out the great whites. When he yelled, “Down!” we were to duck underwater and turn in the direction he told us. Simple enough. (Though I had a mini heart attack every time he… Read more >>

Praise God

By on Track: Compassion - Justice Region: Middle East

I think that it’s very easy to get bogged down by the details of life. The little stresses and the bumps in the road can become mountains without proper perspective. But gratitude is a powerful thing and a gift in itself. It gives us the birds-eye view, and it ends with us praising God. Support raising has had high and low points and I’m not done yet, but I want to take some time to look around, regain proper perspective, and praise God for what I see: Praise God, because His glory is everlasting and His worth incomprehensibly great. Praise God because creation, which is astoundingly majestic… Read more >>

"We Need to Stop!"

By on Track: Compassion - Justice Region: Middle East

Last week, my family traveled to northern CA to see friends and share more about my future ministry in London; it was a great week God really worked in! On our last day, we took a scenic drive through the local mountain range, and made several stops on the side of the road to catch the beauty around us. It was pretty funny; whenever we saw a prime shot we all yelled excitedly, “We need to stop!” As I watched my dad and sister take pictures and admire the sunset, I thought about that phrase. It’s a good summary, actually. We can run around like chickens with our heads cut off, day in and day… Read more >>

God the Storyteller

By on Track: Compassion - Justice Region: Middle East

I'm a sucker for a good story. Well-written books? I lap them up. Skilled storytellers? I'm enthralled with their every anecdote. The best narrators can recount a trip to the grocery store and make it sound like the most epic adventure that you're sad to have missed. Two days later, you’re telling the tale to others. Because that’s the nature of stories – you share them. Storytelling is a true gift, and the best storyteller has got to be the One who gave the gift. God has penned a cosmic-sized story, and I'm pretty sure He loves humor more than all of us. I can't look at my journey so far and… Read more >>

"And here - we - go."

By on Track: Compassion - Justice Region: Middle East

Have you ever plunged into an icy river? you should try it at least once. During Goweek training, a few of us Goers had the chance to take what's called the "Polar Plunge", dunking ourselves under the chilly waters of one of Minnesota's rivers. Before embracing the invigorating and numbing H20, however, we had to make a decision quite similiar to the one that brought us to Goweek in the first place - we had to commit to go all in.  At the start of my senior year, I began applying for GoCorps and following a path God had been designing for the last four years. It's now May, I am a… Read more >>
