Esther - Middle East Updates

Class of 2015
High School Teacher at Boarding School for Refugees in Middle East
Track: Teaching track
Region: Middle East
I am a California native, and a 2013 college grad with a degree in Music.

I love coffee, exploring old places, and conversations with people who are very different from me. Especially over food. The musical nature of everyday life is beautiful to me.

I have a heart for people that are displaced across the world, and God has given me a passion for people in North Africa specifically.

I love Jesus with everything I have.

Letter to Future Goers

By on Track: Teaching Region: Middle East

Dear Future Goers, I hope that as you make preparations and say goodbyes that you feel the deep security of the great God who has great grace for us! To help process my really weird and over-the-top journey in North Africa, I’ve compiled a list of five things/advices that were critical to my time overseas:  5: Commit to learning the language for as long as you can as soon as you arrive. No matter how dumb you feel or how much work it is. God will use whatever language you have to do work in you and through you. For me, I always made the most inappropriate (but hilarious) mistakes in… Read more >>

A Loud, Sweaty, Sports-Related Miracle

By on Track: Teaching Region: Middle East

A few Sundays ago, I had the opportunity to go out and participate in a rare event- something that has not happened in my country for 20+ years.   In my time here in North Africa, I’ve come to understand that the people who live here are very emotionally expressive. Large, dramatic hand gestures accompany storytelling and emphasize every word directly, veeeeery close to your face. Loud voices ring while talking about every day topics, like the price of tomatoes. My taxi driver may yell directions over his radio to a man in another car with a radio also on full blast. The people here in… Read more >>

Four Keys and Ripped Jeans

By on Track: Teaching Region: Middle East

It began with ripped pants and ended with four keys…like most things in my life (just kidding). It began in my college years- I was newly refreshed in Christ, ready to tackle any challenge ahead of me, and waiting for a word from the Lord to just GOOOOO out and serve outside of my city! But in the midst of that waiting, I was dreaming a lot.  I had a pair of pants during this time that was my absolute favorite. I found these jeans at Ross for very cheap because they were unwashed and still soft. They had torn apart at the seams quickly, ripped to shreds by my love of them. I had a friend… Read more >>

Divine Coincidence

By on Track: Teaching Region: Middle East

When I was a young girl, my grandmother had a friend that invested in me from afar. This woman was an exotic world traveler who would send me things from around the world in the mail. Each box contained a colorful postcard with a note detailing her adventures, listing fun facts about the country she went to with a doll or figurine made in that country. Even the packages were interesting- everything about her was interesting to me, a girl from the mountains. I am so thankful for her; she introduced me to a world of brightness and colorful life that I had never seen before. My mother kept these… Read more >>

Kul Yom Elsabt (Every Saturday)

By on Track: Teaching Region: Middle East

I may have mentioned this before, but I work one day a week at a refugee school here in the city. The school, built into an old villa, houses more than 500 Muslim and Christian students from across North and Central Africa. The curriculum is in English, but the students usually speak Arabic during their break times. Music and arts days are on Saturdays, so I spend my Saturdays there. I have been blown away by how amazing and intense these days are, and how present God is in the school, though He shows up in different ways every day that I am there.        … Read more >>
