Back to Gambia

By on Track: Medical Region: Africa - Sub-Saharan

Changes and Decisions Picture-My boy Yankuba after a bath. When I arrived back on Gambian soil I found out that one of my team member had to leave the country due to a family emergency. She was quite a big part of our team and we immediately missed her absence. This brings me to my prayer request for all of you. For several months this year, the clinic I work at struggled financially. We were deep in debt and we spent many days fasting and praying for more support financially and personnel for our station. God provided for us financially and we are now in the green but we are still very short… Read more >>

Adjusting and Readjusting

By on Track: Medical Region: Africa - Sub-Saharan

From Africa to Home and Back I have to be honest, like I’ve been anything but in my past posts, June and July left my head spinning. I did my best to just enjoy each moment I was blessed with both before coming home for a visit and during my time with my family and friends. But no matter how hard I tried to hold onto and savor every moment, somehow they slipped through my fingers and I found myself stressed out over how fast the time was passing. Of course, I had a meltdown or two over that. When it was time for me to return to Gambia, I felt like my time had not been enough but my purpose… Read more >>

A Beautiful Exhaustion?

By on Track: Medical Region: Africa - Sub-Saharan

I’ve known the Andrew Brown Band most of my life. I’m even related to the drummer. They put out their album “A Beautiful Exhaustion” shortly after they made a journey to a village in Kenya for the first time. Or at least that’s how I interpreted it. Now that I live in Sub-Saharan Africa full-time, I realize that was a huge exaggeration… Read more >>

Oranges and Naps

When I thought of Africa before coming to Gambia, I didn’t think of lots and lots of fruit trees. I thought of big open grassland and big spreading trees that are resistant to drought and long dry periods. Here in the Gambia, there are many fruit trees. In my backyard there are a variety of trees. We have a couple orange trees, a grapefruit tree, a mango tree, a cashew tree (yes, cashew nuts grow on trees) and a palm at the back. Right now, the orange and grapefruit trees are ripe and drawing large crowds of kids to my door. At first, I didn’t mind so much. Only a few came at a time. They… Read more >>

Boys, Lizards and Mice: A Typical Sunday in Gambia

By on Track: Medical Region: Africa - Sub-Saharan

I was so excited all last week in anticipation of teaching Sunday School for a class of 7 to 10 year olds. I was excited to know how to do something for a change because I had taught Sunday School in the States since I was 15. But, you know, God has a since of humor to keep me humble. I walked with a large group of children toward the small building we use as a classroom. About halfway, many of the children broke off and went to another building where Sunday School for 11 to 15 was taking place. When I turned around to greet my students, I found myself facing 8 energetic boys! Not one girl… Read more >>
