Learning to Surrender Impatience

I’ll be honest, waiting kills me. As much as I’d like to consider myself a patient person, it’s definitely a fruit that the Lord is stretching me to grow in. I tend to want to make things move as quickly as possible and often attach my own timelines to various things. Spoiler: This never ends up well. I’ve always known I wasn’t the most patient person, but didn’t realize the degree of my impatience until this month.

I’ve just recently begun running again, and anyone who knows running knows it takes time to build endurance and speed. On one of my runs within the first week back, I found myself criticizing the fact that I wasn’t going fast enough or running 3+ miles in any given run. The Holy Spirit quickly took these self-depleting thoughts and asked me, Why are you rushing? I felt the Lord assure me that these things take time to build upon a firm, healthy foundation of runs. And as I pondered it more, I couldn’t help but connect that feeling of wanting to rush my body back into half-marathon running shape to my posture and attitude as I’ve been sitting in this waiting season of support raising.

This idea of giving my waiting and my patience to God hasn’t been an easy thing to surrender, and I’m still working through the details of what that looks like day-to-day. However, I think it’s a starting point in giving God control back and declaring Him as King over everything I do.
