One Dose Cures All

By on Track: Compassion - Justice Region: Asia - South East

A plastic shower curtain was hung down the middle of the room, and it fluttered in the breeze of the AC. It divided the area into two rooms; two rooms for doctors to see patients in. I stepped into the room on the right with a Thai woman who had perfect eyeliner and a low-cut black shirt. Her skin was smooth and her hair was glossy, and as she sat down, she had a natural warmth about her that made me feel at ease, even though I was her interpreter and thought I’d be the one making her feel comfortable. “What have you come in for today?” the doctor sitting next to me on the couch asked. I… Read more >>

Would You Walk Through Trash Water for Jesus?

By on Track: Compassion - Justice Region: Asia - South East

That day, the street flooded up to our knees. It had only been raining for an hour, but the drains couldn’t handle it. Trash floated by in little waves made by the cars, and you got an itchy feeling that you weren’t sure came from being wet or something else that you didn’t want to think about.  When it floods like that in Bangok, you can’t see where you’re stepping. You just push your legs through the water and hope there’s flat ground beneath you, not a pothole or a rusty nail.  Our street has only flooded like that twice. The first time was at the beginning of rainy season. The… Read more >>

"Little Girl" - Youth in a Culture that Honors Age, and other things

By on Track: Compassion - Justice Region: Asia - South East

Little girl, you cut your hair!  Your curls, now short, stand out everywhere. The blonde shows through the sea of black and to some, gives a heart attack. They see your face and think, “oh dear! A foreigner, she’ll speak English here.” But little do they know that I know that they’re only nervous to speak to me in another language.   Little girl, your face is cute!  Your small blue eyes, nose, and lips too. We saw your face on a model last week, And think you too, could be famous as we speak. Our face, our lips, our eyes, our nose, All match the people around us, and it shows… Read more >>

In The Village (Part Five) - Am Said "Yes" To God: Now What?

By on Track: Compassion - Justice Region: Asia - South East

One of the largest barriers to the Gospel in Thailand is the nearly indiscernible difference between being Thai and being Buddhist. For Thai people, they are the same thing: if you are Thai, you are Buddhist. Thai Christians are faced with the challenge of defining themselves within their culture and their families while first identifying themselves as a child of God.  Am attends G and T's after-school program and became a Christian through their ministry. Now, Am is learning about how Christianity fits within his culture, his community, and the sin and pain he sees every day. Read part… Read more >>

In The Village (Part Four) - Niayan's Eyes Tell Stories I Don't Want To Read

By on Track: Compassion - Justice Region: Asia - South East

Naiyan is from a nearby village in Southern Thailand that G and T often visit. We met her during a Sunday School outreach program. She never spoke, so we didn’t know her name. I’ve called her Naiyan here, which means “eyes.” Read part one, part two, part three, and part five here.   I’m not used to seeing scars on children. She stands still, eyes glazed over as the other children run and play around her. Her dress has slipped off one tiny shoulder and her hair is pulled up into a bun that some wisps of hair have escaped from. I crouch down in front of her and smile.  She just looks… Read more >>
