Unity in the Gospel

Posted on Monday, December 26, 2022

As I ended my time in Mexico with Avance, I was encouraged to think about what I had learned about cross-cultural living and ministry. I immediately thought about how different cultures have their own beautiful aspects and how each one adds something new to the kingdom of heaven. This is the topic I had in mind as I worked on my capstone project for Avance.

For my project, I created a visual representation of how different cultures are unified through the gospel. This multimedia, watercolor, and ink on canvas represent two cultures very different from each other. Color culture and Line-culture are both beautiful and unique with their own way of life and worldview. However, they do not have much in common and when viewed together they may even look a bit chaotic like they don’t quite fit together. This is where the beauty of the gospel comes in. When these two separate cultures are viewed from a kingdom perspective, the unique and beautiful aspects of each culture come together to form a beautiful and unified picture, they now have the same purpose. The good news of our Lord creates this intensely unifying force that, if adhered to, can bring together different people and show an image of what His kingdom looks like. Each of these cultures adds something important to the picture- one gives structure and one gives vibrancy- and without the clarifying lens of Christ, it would be lost. In his essay “The Unity of the Church”, Richard Lints writes that “the unity of the church is never intended to be uniformity…(the church) remain different even as they are united…by the gospel, and living out this gospel across many cultures, many languages, many kinds of music, and many differently gifted individuals.”
