Sacred Stories

Posted on Tuesday, November 24, 2020

It’s been a little over a month since my last post, and boy has life been busy! Support raising has been no joke. But it has also been far more of a blessing than I could have imagined!

I want to share a bit more of my story, so below is a section of the letter I’ve written for the purpose of support raising:

My junior year, I was able to take a Master’s level class in Community Transformation (or Community Development). What I saw in CT was a way to be involved in community growth and change that begins with, and is sustained through, community members. The idea that community goals and challenges can be met with assets, skills, talents, and resources from the community itself, lit a fire in me. It had everything I loved about building relationships with individuals, encouraging people to recognize and walk in Whose image they were created, and working towards community driven change.

My senior year the Lord provided an opportunity to partner with a community transformation ministry among a least reached people group. To be transparent, I balked at the prospect of moving overseas to follow this calling, but the Lord spoke through two of my family members to quell my fears and reassure my heart when they both, separately, shared Matt. 19:29 with me: And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life.

And so today, I am raising support to move to Central Asia for two years.

Cut to having 9 weeks of full-time support raising under my belt. In that time, I’ve had 108 appointments where I’ve gotten to share my story! I say my story, but really, it’s the story of what God is doing with my life. In one of those appointments, a friend reminded me how important stories are, and that the ones we remember best, are usually the ones that we repeat. It goes both ways because the stories we repeat the most, become the ones we remember best.

So through this process, I’ve had the privilege of sharing my story over 100 times. If there’s anything that would help me remember that God is faithful, I think it’s a safe bet to say sharing stories of His direct faithfulness in my life a hundred times should do it. It has been such a blessing to share stories of His hand in my life and the opportunity that is now before me! Even after so much repetition, I truly look forward to every chance I get to outline the ways God has revealed His hand and His plan in my life. These stories have become something that feels sacred--evidence of God's goodness, His promises, and His faithfulness. And what a privilege it has been to glean bits of wisdom from people near and dear to my heart--like this one about the power of stories.

I pray these stories of God's faithfulness always stay rooted in my heart, and that the power of stories would be an encouragement for you too! Find the good ones and share them. Lots!

Blessings,

Evelyn
