Hello! I am a college graduate teaching English and Math in North Africa. Through these blogs my hope is that you are able to see how unqualified I am, but just how good and qualified the Lord is.
When I was on the plane headed to the Horn of Africa, I thought I knew what I was getting into. Looking back, I don’t know how I could have possibly thought that, but I did. I knew it was the hottest country in the world (on average) and I knew I would be working at a school. Yet, when I first arrived, I quickly realized just how much I did NOT know. My job looked different than I expected, my housing situation was different, and the city itself was a total shock. I realized in that first week that to make it here, I would have to step it up.

Every organization is different in terms of expectations and policies. Some of those policies involve how often you are allowed to return to the States, or have people come visit you. I would highly recommend getting familiar with your organization’s policies before heading out to the field, because you want to be confident in what you are agreeing to. Obviously you can’t plan for everything, so conversations will need to happen when things come up; but it is wise to prepare as much as you can in advance!

As Believers, our decisions are typically motivated by our faith in some way. When choosing what university to attend my main deciding factors were the community, cost, and how I could grow in my faith. After I graduated, my next question was, “Lord, what do you want me to do?” I think this is a question a lot of us have asked, probably multiple times if we’re being honest. If you are headed overseas, I 100% recommend joing some type of team, club, or league. This is one of the most natural ways to make friends and establish relationships, while also getting familiar with your surroundings. It is crazy how the feeling of being a part of something can really help you take ownership and feel as if you have found your place (kind of) in your new environment.
