Hey future Goers!
Living overseas is no picnic. It's hard. It's uncomfortable to raise support. It's scary to trust in God in a way you've never done before. It's intimidating to move to a new city where you don't speak the language or know anyone. That may not be what you want to hear if you are considering going overseas, but let me encourage you that God will meet you in every insecurity and struggle. Living in Spain stretched me in so many ways I could not have expected and these past two years were a lot richer and better than I could have imagined.
As you embark on your next adventure, here are a few takeaways from my time overseas:
1. The importance of saying yes. Say YES to trying to new foods, learning a new language, navigating a new city, making new friends, learning new skills, unexpected adventures with friends (even when you don't have all the details). One thing I’ve absolutely loved growing in is saying yes and seeing where that take you. Growth happens in uncomfortable situations and when God places you outside of your comfort zone. Lean into those situations and trust God in the midst of the unknown.
2. God works through all things, even when we can’t see it. God doesn’t always work in spectacular or show stopping ways. He works through every situation and in my case it was with a denied visa, support raising, a global pandemic, a broken fridge, frustrations in language learning, and many more. Nothing is wasted and He uses it all for His glory.
3. God is faithful to provide everything you need. He will provide for all your needs whether those needs are financial, practical, or community. He provided for me deep friendships that feel like family, a sweet church community, and adventures I never could have planned for. He is true to His promises and will never abandon or forsake you.
Obeying God often leads to uncomfortable situations but he is bigger than our doubts and questions. I'm so thankful for my time in Spain and would encourage anyone thinking about becoming a Goer to do it! Ask God to show you the next faithful step for your life.
