Learning How to Go

Posted on Friday, September 14, 2018

I'm going to be honest, this is probably the 5th or 6th blog I've tried to write over the years, but this is the first one centred around Christ. Also this is the first blog that comes with an accountability system. I'm from the city of Chicago and I've been stuck in the woods for the past week learning more about my placement in Mexico City. It has riled up my sinuses and riled up my spirit.

I went to culinary school in Hyde Park, NY at the Culinary Institute of America - so I have a few degrees that say I don't burn things (often). I worked in NYC after my graduation in lower Manhattan. I loved it. The hours were crazy, the city even crazier and it really never sleeps – 3 am grocery shopping is a real thing. Working in Manhattan despite the low pay and hours confirmed that I love the manual labor of cooking and the act of serving found in the food industry. I attended a church close to my work called City Light Church and I connected with a small group. We prayed fervently for each other despite our age range, despite our professions and I was encouraged greatly by this body of Christ. However, my season in New York City had come to an end.

I moved to Chicago at the beginning of 2018 to accept a position as an intern as an innovative research chef. It was eye opening and writing recipes from research was a new concept but a pleasing one. Upon moving to Chicago, I was plugged into a church in Wrigglyville and I have loved it. I am sad to be leaving my community that I have built up. But the calling to go is stronger. Although, I had invested in this culinary education I felt lead to steward these talents and use them to serve the kingdom.

When my internship ended I worked under Stephanie Izard as a line cook and though this season was incredibly short. It confirmed my strong love for the 60 hour work weeks the delicious food and the excited diners who came to her restaurant.

Well now it's September, I quit my job as a cook. I have this awesome opportunity to minister to my friends and family. To tell them about this amazing opportunity in Mexico City. I will be working with a team called Avance who work on advancing local churches in Mexico City, really being the hands and feet of Jesus. They also build churches where there are none. My specific role will reside in a building called the Centre of Latin Mobilization (CLM). This building has a youth hostel in which people from all over the world come and stay for a minimum of a month. I will be living with these travelers who come from countries where the bible is not preached. They will come from countries where the local church has died. We hope to plant seeds in these travelers.

One of my favourite things about this ministry is that it is led by locals. These locals do not hesitate to reach out to the diverse community within Mexico City and mobilize the gospel.

One of my friends before I even told him I was leaving for Mexico City felt led to tell me this.

“I see you on a tractor with bags and bags of seeds. You sat in your tractor in front of a huge clearing with a smile. You were going to go plant seeds and you couldn’t wait to get your day started.

Maddy, you are essential to the kingdom of God. You.”

I just want to echo that same phrase to you reading this long mundane blog.

You are essential to the Kingdom of God. You.
