“¡No soy una gringa típica!”

Posted on Wednesday, September 26, 2018

Hey, I’m Laura and I’m currently drinking Chai tea and watching Christmas movies. (Too early?... not for me!) I’ve been serving as a missionary/teacher in Mexico City for nearly 7 weeks now and I can hardly fathom it! If you’ve been keeping up with me, welcome back! I have yet another fun story (or, I guess, a synopsis of a compilation of stories) for you today. If you’re checking out my blog for the first time and are seeking out substantial background information as to why I’m here, I strongly urge you to check out my first post!

Now, let’s begin!

If you know me at all, you’re well-aware that I love eating! [This is something that my Mexican family and others here have quickly concluded over the past few weeks, as well] …and, sure, while the amount that I eat may be surprising in and of itself, what really shocks people here is what I eat. According to many of the Mexicans that I have interacted with, they haven’t seen many gringos eat spicy food and enjoy it. (Hint, hint: anything and all things spicy are my weakness!) Pero whenever I eat anything – tacos, sincronizadas, you name it! – I heap on the habaneros and salsas picantes. Of course, I always get this reaction from the locals when I do: “AYYY (pronounced ‘eyeeee,’ not ‘ayyyy’) NO, Laurita!!! Es muy picante!” (tr.: “AYYY NO, Laurita! It’s very spicy!”)… but that’s why I put it on my food in the first place! Anyway, I’ve become so accustomed to hearing this from people that I now resort to responding como este: “¡No soy una gringa típica! Soy muy rara!,” which tends to result in pretty hearty laughter from the Mexicans (LOL). Anyway, that's pretty much the extent of my anticlimactic story, but I hope you enjoyed it regardless!

On another note, God has really been emphasizing the importance of my being patient and trusting in Him wholly during this season (as always, of course!) during my devotional time recently, and this passage from the book of Psalms that I read a few nights ago speaks into this theme beautifully, so I wanted to leave you with it:

“I waited patiently for the Lord;

And He inclined to me and heard my cry.

He brought me up out of the pit of destruction, out of the miry clay,

And He set my feet upon a rock making my footsteps firm.

He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God;

Many will see and fear

And will trust in the Lord.”

Psalm 40:1-3

Dios les bendiga, Mis Chilitos`. ¡Hasta la próxima vez!
