Oh You of Little Faith

A 5-letter word that could easily make you or break you. The thing about faith though is we get to choose how it affects us and other aspects throughout our lives.

But what is faith? The author of Hebrews defines it as this: “...the reality of what is hoped for, the proof of what is not seen (11:7).” Faith is not fleeting but is substantial enough to generate confidence. In simpler terms: faith leads to confidence.

When we look throughout the Bible, nearly everyone who accomplished anything succeeded because of the faith that they had in God. Of course, their faith wasn’t always perfect.

“Because of your little faith…For truly I tell you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will tell this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” Matthew 17:20

The beautiful thing about this verse is the amount of faith that is required - the size of a mustard seed. A mustard seed is the smallest seed known to man. Because our Jesus knows how little our faith can get, that is how much faith he requires during those hard times. Nothing that Christ authorizes us to do will be impossible. At times we may feel that our faith is at its greatest; at other times we may feel that our faith is suffering. Regardless of where our faith is, God is still enough to do the impossible - to do what we can’t do ourselves.

We are Christians because we have faith that God is real - even though we can’t see Him. We killed that interview and have the job that we do because we had the faith and confidence that we would get it, even though we couldn’t see it. You crossed that finish line during your first track meet because you had faith that you would complete that race. In the book of Matthew, a woman who had suffered from bleeding for 12 years had faith that she would be healed JUST by touching the hem of Jesus’s robe - and she was healed from that moment (Matthew 9:20-22). Her faith saved her. Your faith saved you. If you haven’t accepted Christ, your faith can save you because of the work that Jesus has already done. Jesus has already died on the cross for you, all you have to do is have faith that He did - even if it is the size of a mustard seed.
