Strength in Weakness

Posted on Saturday, October 19, 2019

This month has been significantly busier than the summer months. Other workers have returned to start programs up again, meanwhile I’m still in the full swing of language learning. In my language responsibilities, the Lord has been providing new perspective and energy. A couple weeks ago I was sitting at church listening to the service. The pastor spoke about purpose in the city and shared, “Everyone has a job they have been called to do here, a job they must be faithful to through the power of Christ.” This was about 2 weeks after I had returned from Athens and just felt really doubtful about my place here. I was unsure about what obedience meant for me. Again, I sat in the pew and wept. I felt renewed by the calling God had given me, to simply seek Him regardless of my location or the struggles I'm facing. Also during this season, I have been taking a Bible class on James that directly spoke into the emotions and confusion I was feeling. Here are some of my jumbled notes from the class:

"If you're a believer under oppression, do not forget who you are! Jesus was not a weaker person when He endured the cross. Learn healthy patience. The suffering of a Christian comes from a position of strength and not weakness."

To fortify ourselves in the Gospel is simply the most important, and vital thing! All suffering – even self-inflicted suffering – is worth it. This is just one thing I have been learning over this time, and would love to fill my whole update with it.

Work Life:

This past week we went on a team retreat in the mountainous area of the country. It was so fun and restful to spend time as a team seeking Jesus. We played some games, listened to sermons online, and did a lot of reflective journaling and reading. Our leader Aaron is gifted in teaching so it was fortifying to listen and learn from him.

Last week I was able to meet with a couple people from different organizations and discuss going out to meet and share with locals. Although I've gone a couple times with our team, I look forward to going more consistently and serving alongside other believers in the city. This past Tuesday we went out and had a sweet conversation with some devout/conservative Turkish people. We explicitly shared the differences in our beliefs and the girls were so receptive to what we were saying. It was encouraging to challenge one another in our beliefs to seek real truth.

Things with my local friends have been going well. One girl named Kate* who I hang out with regularly has invited me to her family’s house for dinner. I am so excited to experience the family dinner culture. We haven’t picked a time yet, but I will certainly keep you posted!

Again, Thank you all so much for your continued prayers and support! I am simply amazed and feel so undeserving. To Him be all the honor and the glory!
