I have a problem. My problem is that I have always been a picky eater. This means that every time I enter a new country I assume that I am not going to like the food. This in turn leads me to believe that I am going to lose weight in that country. This unfortunately is a lie. Of all the countries I have visited I have only found one whose national foods I truly did not like. I will not say what country it is because I would not want to hurt its feelings, but I can say that unfortunately it is one of my ancestral homes.
The only time I have actually lost any weight in another country was our year in China and that had way more to do with stress and a ridiculous amount of walking up stairs then it had to do with their food. Because let me tell You I now hold a strong belief that China has the greatest food in the world. Or at least I held this belief until I moved to Germany. I do not know what led me to believe that a country that has as strong of a passion for bread collectively as I have singularly would be a place where I would be starving to find something I liked. Because this food is amazing! All the weight I have lost since arriving (why do we keep moving to countries with a shortage on elevators?) is going to be countered really soon with the amount of heavy delicious goodness that is entering my mouth.
Since our arrival I have had: the best pasta carbonara I have ever had, which is saying something because I have eaten an unhealthy amount of it in my life, I have finally tried Pho, which was great (why did no ever tell me how great Pho is!?), I have had probably the best food of my life which is a German food called Knödel(see above picture), had an amazingly delicious hamburger, which are words I thought I would never say, and I discovered why my life has been missing which is grilled cheese, if this confuses you then let me explain that there is no bread involved, it is just cheese that has been grilled. There are so many more delicious things that I could go on about, but I think you are starting to get my point. Moving here has made me realize that I have not been eating to my full potential until now and I am so thankful that I can now rectify this situation.
On a more serious note (although I am pretty serious about my eating) there are so many great things about this country and the culture we have entered into. Moving to a new place can be stressful and scary, but it is so comforting to be surrounded by people and things that help to make the transition just a little bit easier. God has blessed us in ways that we have not even seen yet by bringing us to this place and I cannot wait to be a year or two down the road and look at what He has done, the relationships we have built, the ways He has used us, and of course all the food we have enjoyed.
