Painting by Elizabeth Reoch.
My Captain, a poem inspired by Jesus' faithful work in my life. Jesus has proven himself to be the best captain and I trust him in bringing me to port (aka 100% funding). I am a proud and thankful first mate on my captain's ship! :D
My Captain
Alone
Sailing the perilous sea
Bleak, stormy, mundane
Rays of the hidden sun at best
Aimlessly navigating.
To what purpose I wonder
Do I fulfill
Unable to look outside myself
Craving closeness
An insatiable desire.
In the distance
Hovering over the water
A curious light shining in the dark
The light approaches me
It is a man upon a great ship.
He calls to me
His commanding voice carries over the water
And wakes me from my senseless state
His voice like from a memory, somewhat familiar
Do I know this man?
All of a sudden
The sea begins to rage
Tossing my boat back and forth
Doubt rises up in me
I am hesitant to answer him.
Frightened, but curious
I cannot help myself and I call back
Fearful that I will be thrown into the sea
To my surprise, he comes aboard my boat
He is calm and unafraid.
He says "Come, follow me"
And as he speaks these words
The sea becomes calm, as does my heart
I can see the faintest light of the breaking dawn
On the horizon.
He quickly turns to board his ship
The innermost part of me is drawn to him
So I follow
My heart can barely contain itself
I am filled with awe by the beauty of what I see.
The industrious crew sings in unison
A joyous praise for their captain
But shame and nakedness suddenly paralyze my being
Condemnation crashes over me
I realize that I am unworthy to be on this ship.
The man turns towards me
His gaze of love pierces through me
Responding to my thoughts, the man says
"Return to your boat and perish at sea
Or accompany me on my ship to port"
A newness like warmth
Overwhelms me
Radiating from within me
The morning star rising in my heart
As I call this man my captain.
