My Heart Sings

Posted on Wednesday, April 5, 2017

I wrote this blog post on the way back from Costa Rica. I had forgotten about it, but I thought you all might like to read it now.

I read in a book once that every time this character saw her home she could feel her heart sing. Well, I felt my heart sing when I saw the lights of my city below the clouds. I couldn't be happier to be home.

Home is where the heart is. I've thought a lot on this quote ever since I first moved to college. I have to agree. There's a verse that states "where your heart is, there may your treasure be also." I think home is that treasure.

Mexico City is home to me. The one thing that has defined my entire time in Mexico is my love for my students. They make me laugh. They've made me cry. They frustrate me so much, and they bring me so much joy. They've driven me crazy so many times, and there have been many days where I've wondered whether I've done any good at all as their teacher. But, amidst all the ups and downs, I have never stopped loving them. In fact, I believe I love them more every day with everything I learn about them, my love for them grows. Being in Mexico, being so far from my family, has not been all easy. It's like my heart is in two places. But I wouldn't change a single thing about being here. If I had time, I would share with you all the things I love about each of my students. I would tell you all the stories that made me laugh. I would tell you about the times they got on my last nerve and I was so stressed that I thought I would break. I would tell you about all of those things, and show you how each one made me love them more. I can't imagine life without my students. Home is where the heart is. Home is the place that makes your heart sing. Home is, for me, wherever my family and students are, because they are my heart.
