Around this time last year, I wrote about a delightful weekend retreat we took as a church. This year, as I looked up at the mountains where we stayed I reflected on those that God has moved in my life.
This year, we were a group of nearly 90 people. God's presence and activity was undeniable. In three short days we saw people commit their hearts, time, and lives to Christ. We worshiped and rejoiced with humble sincerity. We forged stronger ties as a community and in small groups. Adoration, surrender, and commitment defined our days.
All weekend, I rested in the peace of Christ, marveled in awe, and praised the Lord for what I saw happening all around me. But I also returned to Christ's feet in gratitude. The contrast between this year and last is humbling. Not only did I look with joy upon what had happened in other's lives, but I was overwhelmed by how God has worked in my own life. Here's an honest examination of that transformation.
Although I enjoyed our retreat last year, I felt a somewhat isolated and quite insecure. This year I never succeeded in sneaking some time alone because I was so surrounded by loved ones! Last year I struggled to maintain concentration and understanding linguistically as the weekend continued. This year I chatted casually in Italian while driving home, still not fatigued by the language. Last year I was seeking further affirmation that I fit this place and purpose. This year I praised God wholeheartedly for such complete compatibility. Last year, I anxiously prayed for the first time in Italian (it's actually quite challenging!). This year many of my private prayers poured out in my second language. And last year I was dreaming of the day where I might have something to offer those around me. This year I see how I am both cared for and caring for others in this extraordinary community.
To say God has blessed this church and my life is an understatement. The Lord is continuing great works in and through this beautiful group and keeps transforming our brokenness into His holiness. Let's pray for even more growth, faithfulness, and glorifying of God Almighty!
