My family swiftly realized that many of my activities here in Rome revolve around food. Besides being delicious, sharing meals provides a reason to get together, something to do in the silent moments, and conversation points. It also creates an exquisitely unique environment where everyone can relax a bit, strangers can comfortably get to know each other, and anyone is welcome.
On Sunday, my church enjoyed the wonderful weather with a fun picnic in the park after the service. That day I had the joy of hanging out with church members and one of my friends who came to try our Church. With so many different forms of Christianity, it’s no surprise that she had no idea a worship service like ours exists. But even if the service might be unknown or uncomfortable for someone new, the grass in the park creates a common-ground.
Some people might look at the surface and say my job is cooking, eating, or taking walks. Of course, there are also many hours of studying, preparing, teaching, meeting, and planning. But there is great beauty in the relational ministry my church does and in which I am blessed to participate.
So don’t be deceived: a picnic in the park does not mean we aren’t doing anything. Connecting people to a community only happens when that community exemplified. Real conversations form in the quiet little moments walking to the water fountain, or among a group of chill people lounging on blankets. Friendships develop by experiencing things together, be it a sport, song, or meal. Curiosity and confidence in asking questions flourish in this relaxed habitat.
Honestly, Sunday could not have been more enjoyable. Gathering to learn, praise, and pray. Eating and playing volleyball. Laughter and conversations. Music and welcoming passersby. Language learning and teaching. The wonderful mix of giving and receiving. I believe I glimpsed the beauty of a church like the one of the New Testament. Let’s hope we continue to build a community like this model!
“They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common. They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.” Acts 2:42-47
