The doctors said he wouldn’t live past 2 weeks if he was born. After years of signing, he is talking. Though small for his age, he’s running and playing. He achieves grade level marks in most subjects. He is a miracle. But the miraculous life is rarely an easy one.
Friends and family have inspired me through stories, hugs, prayers, texts, and more. This process certainly calls for such an outpouring from my support system. I pray I’m a faithful intercessor on their behalf and grateful steward of their blessings.
Touched deeply by much of what I heard, I’ve taken on this story of a little boy, now 10, as a special reminder. Hearing tales of John’s good times, struggles, God’s hand, and unexpected joys could bring anyone to tears. So I’ll never forget when my friend looked at me and said, “If you get frustrated, think of John.” John, I thought to myself. Think of John.
John: The symbol of perseverance. John: The symbol of faith. The symbol of God’s healing. The evidence of miracles. The reminder of what is taken for granted. The example of joy and victory. John who loves Jesus, and whom Jesus loves.
There are, most assuredly, frustrating times on the path ahead. But God is always good, God is always present, and God is always strong. What’s the biggest blessing I’ve received this summer as I develop new partnerships and strengthen relationships? My new mental boxful of stories revealing the truth of that sentence. Stories like John’s, to keep me going on the bad days and remind me God works miracles. Big or small, these glimpses of heaven will shine light in the darkest places. So when I’m going through a rough patch, I’ll think of John—or a hundred others praising God’s works. Even when prospects look bleak, God’s promises are always sure.
