I find myself in a posture of thankfulness for this week because of the upcoming holiday, but not necessarily for the reasons that I expected.
In the past, I have done "30 Days of Thankfulness" challenges (food somehow always ends up on the list), and answered questions time and time again in my small group about thankfulness and what I am thankful for. It always ends up containing the same things: friendship, donuts, bean burritos, family and a warm home to live in.
Recently, my idea of thankfulness has grown in about fifteen different directions.
I have become a student of culture in preparing to immerse myself in a completely new and incredibly different way of life overseas. This has completely changed and reshaped my worldview about how I do life in the context of a worldwide hodgepodge of beautiful cultures.
So this year, in addition to being thankful for friendships, donuts, bean burritos, family and a warm home to live in, I am thankful for my family's safety, and that they do not have to fear their government.
I am thankful that we have a place to worship where they have no threat from being shut down.
I am thankful that all of my family and friends have found work in some capacity, and that they are not prohibited from working because of their identity.
I am thankful that I live in an area where food is grown and easy to access, and I have the freedom to eat anything I want whenever I want- food is always widely available.
I am thankful I do not have to live in fear because of my identity as a woman.
The more that I study the culture and country that will be my new home, I am humbled by God. My life will look radically different when I go, but I am excited for the new blessings that will come in the midst of my transition.
God, please grant me the state of mind to continue to be thankful in the midst of trials and difficulties. Thank you for how you have worked in my mind and life already!
