Being Far Away
Something I’ve learned while being in the field is not only do I have to trust the Lord with my own life in new ways, but also the lives of those I care about; those that are far away. Over the last 2 years I have experienced the first excitements of adventure stepping out into a great big world feeling strengthened by my call to serve and joyful to know that Jesus wanted me to do this specific work in this unique place; and I have also felt the pains of being in that specific place, that is far away from people and circumstances that at times, seem to need me. Had a while to spare today that also happened to be an hour that my best friend in the states was still awake. We caught up on life as fast as we could, shared funny stories and recent events from our small town. As she started asking me how I was doing here and how my work was going, I could feel the bubbles start to swarm in my head. Hey, What are you doing with your life? This is the question I was dreading most before taking a two week trip home for Christmas. I am a little over halfway through my two year term and am really becoming a part of the community here, feeling at home more places than my apartment and moving through the city freely without worrying about language. Knowing how quickly the last 14 months have gone by has me looking forward to the next 9 or so as if they are going to whiz by without me being able to savor them. Having a good name is so important here but I never knew this little girl's real name, the first time I saw her she was so small we were told not to pick her up. " She has heart disease" they told me, " she is to weak to be held" they warned me. I watched her little blue face squish into defiant cries as she no doubt knew there were plenty of hands there to hold her.
