My Letter to Future Goers

Posted on Thursday, February 25, 2016

To my brothers and sisters in Jesus,

Thank you for going to the ends of the earth as we follow Jesus' call to be His witnesses and to make disciples. The Lord opened the doors for me to go even though I didn't find myself qualified or competent. He reminded me that He was competent, and He offered me the opportunity to go. I knew I would always regret it if I didn't walk through those open doors. I'm glad I did. I share a bit of my experience with the prayer that it may help you.

Throughout the last two years our heavenly Father drew me into deeper relationship with Himself. As I prepared to leave for SE Asia, He called me to trust Him with the unknown of stepping into a completely different world. By His grace, I trusted Him again and again. Once I was there He grew my confidence in Him and His promises. He assured me of His protection and presence during quiet evenings on the farm. When I slipped into auto-pilot in my relationship with Him, Jesus challenged me to make Him and our time together a priority. After all, I claimed to be following Him. Through it all, He was faithful and never let me down.

Using my teammates, God taught me about prayer, grace, and love. They demonstrated what honest heartfelt prayer looked like and the power it had. I learned not to under-estimate what talking from my heart with the King of the Universe could do. My teammates also showed me and others the grace and unconditional love of our Father. I learned more fully that we were all works in progress which allowed us the opportunity to show others the grace and love we had received in Jesus.

As you walk the path of a Goer, ask plenty of questions and try not to make generalizations or assumptions about what you would be doing from the experiences of other Goers. Each organization is different with different guidelines and expectations, so do your best to clarify the details for your particular location. We all have expectations but the more of them we leave at home the better.

Flexibility is key because things are unpredictable and different in another country. I found that the more loosely I held plans and expected future events, the more easily I was able to adjust when things changed. With time, I found that I could trust God with the changes. They didn't surprise Him and were a part of His plan. Social and cultural differences called for even more flexibility. My team leaders helped me to learn cultural differences usually aren't wrong or even weird, they're just different. That mindset toward my new culture helped me to be more accepting and engaging with things that seemed crazy from the perspective of my home culture.

As you continue your journey with Jesus remember to keep your priorities straight. Love God and love people. Remember what God has called you to do. Put boundaries around these things to help protect them. Trust in the Lord and have honest conversation with Him. Humble yourself for God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.

Thank you for your willingness to step out and follow our good Shepherd and King. May He fill you with His Spirit and cause you to overflow with grace and truth as you go to share Him with those who have not heard.

Let's do our best to follow Jesus,

N
