The Power of Prayer

Pray without ceasing.

Rely on God.

Nothing is too big for The Lord.

These are things that most Christians hear their entire life. How much do you actually put this into practice or really do them?

This past month, one of my teammates got Dengue fever. This is a mosquito-borne illness that causes extreme fatigue, weak bones, weak muscles and generalized sickness. It also drops your platelets to dangerous levels which can lead to hemorrhaging and shock. If it is untreated it can lead to death. Needless to say, we were worried and admitted her to the hospital.

During this time there was a lot of prayer time and a lot of visits to the hospital to be with our teammate and her platelets were still dropping. We were praying, and they kept dropping. We started to fear that she would have to receive a blood transfusion…in a third-world country.

It wasn’t until one night with my teammate, Mo, I really saw the power of prayer. This night I experienced Mo praying to Jesus and asking Him for healing and asking for a miracle. Even though English is not his first language, he was praying with courage and confidence that The Lord can and WILL heal.

The next morning the platelet levels stabilized. The next draw they had risen. The blood draw after that, they rose again.

This was impressive to me from a medical standpoint but I was skeptical that it was ALL God.

A few nights ago, we got back late and were exhausted from a team planning weekend and traveling back and forth. We were excited to be home and realized that someone had dead bolted the door and we couldn’t figure out the lock. Mo lives next door so we asked if he could help, fully preparing for him to crawl through the window or kick in the door. In the middle of our struggle, Mo suggested that we pray.

We ignored him at first and then, in a moment of hopelessness, asked him to pray. After the prayer I turned the key in the lock and it opened instantly. We cried out a shout and were all very happy to be back in our home at last. This moment was a reminder for all of us. A reminder to rely on God. Pray without ceasing!

I could tell so many more stories on prayers this month. The thing that I am learning is:

Nothing too big for our God and nothing is too small! He wants you to pray. So do it.

If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. (James 1:5, 6 ESV)
