My letter to future goers
Posted on October 16, 2015
When I decided to take on my first overseas assignment. My first overseas assignment ever. I decided to go big. Why not go for 2 years? I said to myself, “What have a got to loose? I’m a single girl without afamily to take care. I don’t have a house, I don’t have a car, I don’t even have a pet.” Yet I still had a lot of questions. Do I have enough experience to take on an assignment this long? Is my faith strong enough to withstand the trials I may face? Does God want me to go or do I want to go to prove something- either to myself or to other people? What you’ll be hearing a lot now and... Read morePower over Demons

This week I began living with a student who has lived in the dorms the entire time she has attended at the university nearby. I don’t want to use her real name so I will call her Manisan. She is now a senior and completing her time her doing her “practice” teaching at the high school in town. There is a different dynamic living in the house with a student. It is always good to reflect on the things that we are thankful for. I have so many things to be thankful for since last year. God has revealed a lot of things about me and I have discovered much about myself. I looked around at the people that I was with and I was so grateful that God has brought me to a point where I am so comfortable with the friends that I share my time with here. I really felt like I was with my family and I am so... Read more

As my shift was about to come to an end last Thursday, one of our students walked into the student center and he asked me how I was doing. He looked tired and thin, although that is the norm for most Asians, and especially college students here. I asked him if he was doing alright. He responded with a smile and said, “I am good Ate Jamie but I am very tired because I am very busy and I have many assignments.” I asked him if he had eaten yet today and he said, “no Ate, I haven’t had time to cook anything other than rice.” I was with a co-worker who offered over her small bag of peanuts. She... Read moreGod. Family. Baseball.

It is typical to write about the past year and show all of the lessons that you have learned. I have a lot of things to reflect on as this year begins but I would like to highlight one thing that I have been learning in my time away. Family is really important. This past Christmas Eve, I found out that my smart, compassionate, and always funny grandfather had passed. He was the man with life lessons and was such an amazing example of what a marriage should look like. He had an unwavering faith and so much love for his family. He was 90 years old and going strong. He had just been to Mexico... Read more
