Letter to Future Goers

Posted on Sunday, September 13, 2015

I am so thankful for my two years overseas with GoCorps. I wouldn't trade my experience for anything. But looking back, there are a few things I would have done differently. I am so thankful for God's grace and I try to always remember that life is a journey.

I love learning language. I love learning about different cultures. I love thinking and reading and learning about how we as Christians can share the gospel in the most "effective" way possible. While those are all great things, sometimes I realized I was relying more on my own knowledge and understanding than on the Lord and his word. I sometimes became so paralyzed by fear of not sharing in the best way that I passed up great opportunities to step out in faith and proclaim God's Word boldly, knowing that God's Word does not return to him empty but will accomplish what he desires and achieve the purpose for which he sent it (Isaiah 55:11). Many if not most times we saw fruit was from people hearing straight from the Word of God. So I would say get it out there!
Also, while it can be hard to be away from family and friends at home, and while of course it is ok to stay in touch with some family and friends from home, I would encourage goers to keep correspondence with people from home to a reasonable minimum as to go deep with people in your host country, both nationals and foreigners. Allow your new friends around you to be family to you, and be family to them. I would encourage you to always ask questions and learn as much as you can. Be willing to think about things in a new way.

But I would say the most important bit of advice I would like to give to future goers is to stay connected to the Vine as if your life depended on it. Because you will quickly see that it does: your life depends on it. And so does your ministry. If you are fighting to just survive and if you are not filled with the love of God, it is actually impossible to share the love of God with others.

Hold on tight! It's going to be a crazy ride!
