The Syrian war has caused so much death and destruction. I can imagine Jesus weeping over all of the suffering, and especially over the most recent events. BBC claims that the number of child refugees from Syria has surpassed 1 million, and the Syrian refugee crisis is considered to be the worst in the world for 20 years since the Rwandan genocide. Kurds in Syria have been particularly affected recently by battles between their militias and some Al-Qaeda linked groups who are creating quite a bit of death and destruction, causing even more Kurds to have to flee their homes.
A few weeks ago, a portion of my team will be taking a weeklong trip to an outlying neighborhood of our city where hundreds of Kurdish Syrian families have settled. In the past, we'd noticed a lot of spiritual openness in this group, and we wanted to invest some extended time in the community, which is too far away to visit very frequently. Many Kurdish Syrian families attend our Moms and Tots program, and we have great relationships with a few families in the community. We be hosted English classes, Bible studies, children’s activities, and spent time building into the community relationally.
The week was a success, and many people took large steps in coming to faith. We've decided to invest more time and energy in the community going forward. Please pray that the Lord would amaze us with the work he will do in this community.
