Language & Cultural Preservationist

The word “refugee” often brings strong emotions—but what if, in His sovereignty, God allowed some to be displaced not by accident, but so they might encounter the hope of the Gospel? That’s the story of one East African Muslim people group. For decades, they lived in a nation closed to Christian witness. Persecuted and unreached, they fled civil war and spent years in refugee camps.

Today, over 95 families from this group have resettled in a northeastern U.S. city. While they’ve found safety, they now face new challenges. One is the erosion of traditional family structures. Children quickly adapt to American schools, where English replaces the language spoken by their grandparents—who historically played a central role in raising them. Parents are caught between two cultures, trying to hold on to their heritage while navigating American life. As a result, children often feel unsure of their identity and where they belong.

In the midst of these struggles, many have reached out for help. In response, God has raised up a team of Christ followers to meet practical needs, build trust, and share Jesus—leading to growing openness in the community.

In this role, you’ll help preserve cultural and language identity through written and visual documentation while bridging generational gaps. You’ll connect the wisdom of grandparents to the hearts of their grandchildren through language learning and educational support. You’ll help kids succeed in school while strengthening family bonds and cultural continuity.

Most importantly, you’ll model the gospel: how God, in Christ, stepped into human culture, learned our language, and restored broken relationships—making it possible for us to become children of God.
