(CLOSED) STEM, Education and Community Engagement in Central Asia

For one month this summer, apply and develop your professional skills by participating in one of six internship tracks at a local university in Central Asia. You will be learning alongside the university students and potentially providing some tutoring in your specific track. It’s the desire of the team leaders and teammates that you will work to enhance the welfare of individuals, groups and communities. You will have the opportunity to spend time with students during and outside of program time, building relationships and sharing your faith. The opportunities for each major(s) are as follows:

  • Engineering: Participate in summer student internships. Accompany students to the energy producing plants, including a hydroelectric dam, a solar farm or potentially the oil fields. The students receive hands-on training in preparation for future careers in the energy sector. You will join them for part of this training. Providing tutoring in English and/or math is likely.

  • Computer Science: Work with students in on various freelance projects and attend specialized workshops at the university. You will have the opportunity to facilitate some of these workshops, sharing your passion for software, hardware and human elements of computer science. Providing tutoring in English and/or math is likely.

  • Business/Economics: Serve in various capacities at the Touristic Center, a state-of-the-art 5-star resort complex catering to foreign dignitaries, celebrities and high-class tourists. This team has not yet placed our interns with these students. We imagine it will be interesting for students – often from middle-class backgrounds – to enter the experience of luxury alongside Americans, crossing cultures and learning together. Providing tutoring in English is likely.

  • English: Developing English skills is generally a need for students across the board. Providing tutoring in English is likely.

  • Middle/High School Education: Partner with local private schools to provide English language tutoring to middle school and high school students. The tutoring will likely focus more on language skills rather than subject-specific material.

  • Social Work: Attend student internships and listen to and advise them on their struggles. Having someone who can listen to them and compile a report for the team to present on mental/emotional health would be helpful. Potentially present seminars or workshops on mental health/self-care/managing burnout (this is a topic of great need). Be a pioneer of this team's presence in the social work sphere at the grassroots level. Survey what sort of social services and organizations are available and prepare a report on findings.
