When some people graduate, they get a job in their hometown—some stay closer to college. Some ambitious students go on to graduate school, and then to even higher education. A few live in their parents’ basements and play video games. But suddenly, there was a new option for me: to be a goer.
What’s a goer? I wasn’t sure either, but this is how I became one.
I was a senior in college, ready to graduate in 8 shorts months, and trying to decide what in the world to do with my life. I wanted to do something impactful, that would really make a difference, but didn’t know exactly how that could work.
I was studying communications, public relations, and marketing, and had networked around Northeast Indiana since early high school. I was set up beautifully for a job, with four great summer internships under my belt and plenty of connections, but the Lord had other plans.
I had an interest in “missions” but didn’t see myself as a Bible translator or full-time traditional missionary. Plus, I wasn’t even studying missions, and hadn’t considered it until recently.
I got connected to GoCorps through Huntington University’s mission fair. I went looking for a short-term trip to take after I graduated – before I found a full-time job.
GoCorps contacted me after the mission fair and asked if I wanted to get on a Zoom call. I thought, sure, why not?
Then I learned it was a 2-year commitment.
NOPE…not a chance. I had zero intentions of leaving for 2 years!
Tucker, who would end up guiding me through this whole process, was the one who spoke with me on this Zoom call.
He told me GoCorps believed in tithing your career. Huh?
I’ll pull the explanation out of the book, Tithe Your Career:
“Simply put, as a college student or recent grad, God has blessed you with roughly 20 years of life and learning. So, a tithe of your age is 2 years. Here it is: 20 years x 10% = 2 years.”
Cool, right? That’s what I thought, too. You can use your first 2 years after graduation to give yourself, your time, and your talents directly to the Lord.
In order to ensure you’re not reading a full book right now, I’m going to cut to the chase. I decided if God wanted me to do this, I’d do it.
But he would have to let me know! I asked him for a sign to say YES.
So I submitted the application on a Saturday morning and went to church the next day.
I sat in my pew, and halfway through the sermon, my pastor starting preach on global missions, and this is what he said…
“So, what am I challenging you to do at the end of the day? The first thing is this.”
Then he clicked to the next slide.
“SAY YES TO GLOBAL MISSIONS.”
He read it out loud.
Every siren in my brain went off. WHAT did he say?
How is it that I asked for a sign to say yes, and the very next day, there was a projector in front of my face that told me to say yes?
So, long story short, I said yes!
That was October 2025, and as of yesterday, September 2nd, 2026, I submitted my visa request to leave for Santiago, Chile.
The Lord does work in mysterious ways, and he's changed my life trajectory. But I couldn't be more honored to give the firstfruits of my degree right back to him.
