I fell in love with Spanish in high school and have been working hard to gain full fluency ever since. That’s why I chose to go to college in San Antonio, TX and double major in Spanish and Communication. When the time came for me to figure out what I wanted to do after college, I knew I wanted to live in a Spanish-speaking environment for an extended period of time to finalize the fluency I’d been developing for the past 8 years.
I looked into and applied for programs like Fulbright and Peace Corps, but it became clear as I went through this process those opportunities weren’t what I truly wanted to do. The Lord had been walking with me throughout this process but when that realization truly hit me, I cried out to Him for help. I didn’t think there were any other options and didn’t know what to do. A few days later, one of my friends sent me the link to GoCorps, or, in her words, “Peace Corps, but make it Christian.”
It was exactly what I had been looking for. The second I went on the GoCorps website and saw the position for a Writer in Quito, Ecuador, I was hooked. There was my dream job, staring me in the face… minus having to fundraise my salary. I was initially extremely concerned about that part, but a few weeks before being introduced to GoCorps, I had gone on a mission trip to Reynosa, México with my church. On this trip I met other women my age who were living as missionaries in that community. They helped me see that this way of life was not only possible, but also meaningful in the deepest ways.
A month later, I applied for the Writer position in Quito, Ecuador through GoCorps. I am now starting my fundraising journey so I can move to Ecuador next spring, which will be a little over a year since the whole process began. I am nervous, excited, and looking forward to experiencing the Lord sustain me, grow me, and work with and through me in everything that lies ahead.
