A cup of coffee. There is a cup that my life revolves around and fuels my overworking tendencies. A cup that signals my never-ending “go, go, go” mentality. It’s hard to get through a day without a cup of coffee, especially in the busy life of a 20-something. This cup of coffee is the foundation for all the hurry in my life. I hurry around in the morning to make it to work on time, always with a cup of coffee in hand. I get out of bed in a hurry on my days off to quickly get started on my long list of chores, errands, and meetings… never forgetting a cup of coffee. The thing about this cup of coffee that my hurry is built upon is that it’s not enjoyed. Yes, there are often flavors of honey or lavender in the cup but it’s never truly enjoyed.
At my recent pre-field training with One Collective, we were asked the question, “How is hurry depicted in your life?” Reflecting on this question has me wondering what it would look like to turn this consistently hurried, daily cup of coffee into an opportunity to experience slowness in the presence of the Lord. Could this cup of coffee become a sacred moment of solitude shared with Jesus? I imagine Jesus teaching me how to watch the steam evaporate from my hot coffee. Teaching me to slow down when I drink this coffee, taking in and identifying the natural flavor notes of each unique bean. I know He can teach me these things about having a cup of coffee, but I wonder how much more He could teach me about Himself and living a life of slowness if I took the time to set the hurry aside for an hour and invite Him to share a cup of coffee with me.
