Like you, I wanted to serve the Lord while doing the work I am passionate about, and so this comes from having experienced just that. I write knowing we are among the blessed that He has allowed to carry His word of truth to those far beyond our comfort zones. I didn't expect to look back on these past two years speechless. Yet I sit in utter awe of our Father, having the joy of experiencing God in a new culture, language, and way of working. To realize how much He has revealed about Himself through these experiences of service, where it now seems I've been the one served by Him.
I went with so many tools and expectations, and each time I used one or had to let one go, God added another. After two years, I returned to my home with more than I could have imagined. My skills have sharpened, my perspective widened, and my heart softened. I'm sure that if I had stayed and pursued the American dream, my skills would have grown just as much, but I would have missed the moments when it seemed like heaven touched earth, as God so tangibly allowed me to see Him at work and join Him.
So, Goer...God always has a higher calling for us than we expect, and He is calling you now. It's your turn to stand in the gap, to say "here am I, send me," to become a fisher of men (Ezekiel 22:30, Isaiah 6:8, Matthew 4:19). Are you prepared, probably not more than anyone else He has called, that's why it requires faith. So go and live expectantly the life God has invited you into, even if it's a path not well trodden.
