A poem for those longing for heaven.
You’ll never belong to the place that you came from and never belong to the place that you go. You’re stuck in the middle with no place to feel safe, with no people or town to call home.
When God called to Abram, he said, “Leave your people. Just trust me: I’ve got you. Now go. I’ll show you a land full of blessings and hope. If you trust me, I’ll make it a home.”
So Abram set out full of questions to roam through the earth and the path set before him. He tried and he failed to do things his way, but he called on the name of the Lord.
He built altars to God in the places he went though mistakes plagued his path for a while. But he started to wonder when God would fulfill the great promise he made of a child.
He said, “Where is this family you promised me when I was back in my home far away? The land I inhabit is strange and unusual and I’m longing for a reason to stay.”
God said, “Have you forgotten the person I am and the way I have guided your path? The road you are on is lonely and hard, but I am worthy of what I have asked.”
“Do not be afraid, Abram, for I am your shield. I alone am for you, your reward. But trust me and wait for my plan to deliver; with me, your reward will be more.”
“There’s something that I’d like to show you - look up! Do you see all the stars in the sky? Just like this, like the grains of sand in the sea, your family will number on earth.”
One day, you won’t search for a place to belong, for a place to feel safe or call home. Your obedience to me is creating a family - my family - for I call you my own.
Your home’s not a box or a house built by hands or a spot you hold dear on this earth. Your place is with me; with your new family that is growing because I am at work.
It’ll take time to see it, the fruit of your labor, the efforts of blood, sweat, and tears. The moments you’ve wondered, “Is this the right path that I’m walking, if all I feel is fear?”
He knows what it costs you, he knows what he’s asked of his servants so dearly beloved. He says “Put down your fear and your worries, see that I guide your steps from above.”
You’ll never belong to the place that you come from and never belong to the place that you go. “But wherever I lead you,” says God from above, “just know all roads with me lead to home.”
